ESL Training for Business Consultants in Japan

Session Description

My project is in line with the concept of lifelong learning, which constitutes one of the key elements of the Japanese Constitution, Basic Education Act.  Lifelong learning is the backbone of the democratic society in Japan, thereby making it a vital part of every adult’s life. It is thought that every citizen must keep learning and developing his/her skills to add value to society.

I have chosen the topic of ESL (English as a Second Language) Training for Business Consultants due to the following reasons: 1) I believe business consultants have a huge impact on the society as a whole by providing their services to various business across all industries, so giving them a chance to take my course could have a positive impact on many people as a chain reaction; 2) I work for a consulting firm and therefore I see that business consultants need very specific vocabulary and content in English in order to take their skills to the next level but such courses are not widely available in regular ESL schools.

The course is quite short, as it is a mini-online course, but I am planning on building further modules to extend it. The content is centered around IT and how new trends in IT impact infrastructure as well as job market, healthcare and manufacturing. Again, this is not a business consulting course, it’s an ESL course for business consultants.

Hajimemashite - or nice to meet you (in Japanese). My name is Joanna Wilczewska-Muraishi and I am a UH LTEC graduate student based in Tokyo, Japan. I was born in Warsaw, Poland, where I’m currently at due to an illness in the family. I was planning to go back to Tokyo for the conference presentation as the time zone difference is easier to manage from Japan. However, Poland is in a lockdown so I’m stuck here with my 18-month-old daughter. I’m a single parent so things are a bit stressful and challenging these days.

More about me: I have 20+ years of teaching experience and learning content development. I used to work for Berlitz, EF/Hult/Ashridge and GLOBIS University. I’m a mentor, counselor, a teacher as well as a business consultant. I got my BA in European Education from Warsaw University English Teacher's Training College, Warsaw, Poland; my MBA from GLOBIS University, Graduate School of Management, Tokyo, Japan; and I will have completed my COLT Graduate Certificate from UH by the end of this spring. This presentation is the culmination of my studies at UH and the fruit of my research at the current workplace (a Japanese consulting firm).
