Data-driven decisions! Introduction to Data Analytics for Accounting Mini Course

Session Description

IBM estimates that bad data costs the United States approximately $3.1 trillion dollars every year. Data analytics is trending for all types of accounting professionals, including external auditors, internal auditors, financial planners, CFO’s, and finance leaders. According to a recent survey by one of the four largest accounting firms named PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC), 85% of surveyed CEO’s located worldwide said that they place a high value on data analytics and using digital technologies for a competitive advantage.This online course is an introduction to data analytics and will help with the development and enhancement of data analytic skills including identifying questions surrounding big data, becoming familiar with the data, and using data for forecasting and predictive analytics. This is a one credit elective course delivered synchronously and asynchronously over 5 weeks that is used to aid students who are pursuing careers that require a knowledge of data analytics.

Aloha, my name is Tialei, and I am a designer/instructor of the course. I am an assistant professor at Brigham Young University - Hawaii. I love helping students to be more successful and employable for their future business careers. I am currently working towards my doctorate in Learning Design and Technology at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. My background is in auditing and financial accounting. I bring my real-world auditing experience to the class and examine how data analytics can provide more valuable insights within auditing. Aloha, my name is Jewel, and I am a designer of the course. I work as a preschool special education teacher. I love providing extra curricular experiences for my students including gardening and outdoor activities. I am also working towards my doctorate in Learning Design and Technology at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. My background is in PreK-6th grade general education and PreK-8th grade special education. My knowledge of data analytics is very limited, but I am looking forward to learning and growing in this subject.
